The empirical regularities in Section 1 give rise to the following main questions:

  1. What does inequality in living standards look like globally?

  2. What could have given rise to differences in income and growth?

  3. Can poor nations catch up to the rich?

  4. What are correlates of economic growth?

  5. Can we go deeper beyond correlation to understand basic causes?

  6. What are these fundamental or basic causes? R&D? Education? Institutions and Politics? Or can we go further back: Cultural Origins? Are these possible causes supported by empirical evidence?
